A mixture of tert-butyl (8aS)-8a-(3-azidophenyl)-4,4a,5,7,8,8a-hexahydropyrano[4,3-d][1,3]thiazin-2-ylcarbamate (0.398 g, 1.02 mmol) and palladium on carbon −10% by weight (0.200 g) in ethanol (25 mL) is purged with nitrogen then hydrogen. The reaction is stirred at room temperature under hydrogen (30 psi) for 2 h. Na2SO4 is added to the reaction mixture and it is filtered through diatomaceous earth, using methanol to rinse the filter cake. The solvent is removed under reduced pressure to give the title compound (0.361 g, 97%). ES/MS m/e: 364 (M+1).
