A solution of potassium hydroxide (150 mg, 2.60 mmol) in water (0.5 ml) is added to a solution of 2-(trifluoroacetylamino)-5,6-bis(methoxymethyl)indane (240 mg, 0.75 mmol) in methanol (3 mL) and the mixture is heated at reflux for 2.5 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue is partitioned between aqueous sodium hydroxide (10 mL) and ethyl acetate (20 mL). The organic extract is dried (MgSO4) and the solvent is removed in vacuo to leave the product as a dark oil.
