1.46 g of N-(5-cyanoindan-1-yl)propionic acid amide were dissolved in 20 ml of a 75% aqueous formic acid solution. 1.1 g of Rainey nickel were added to this solution followed by heating and refluxing for 2 hours. After returning the reaction solution to room temperature and filtering with CELITE, the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was added to water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. After washing the organic layer with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and saturated brine, the organic layer was dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to obtain 1.18 g of the target compound. Yield: 80%
