Procedure
To a solution of ethyl 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-7-carboxylate (2.03 g, 9.22 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) was added iodine (2.57 g, 10.14 mmol) and silver sulfate (3.45 g, 11.06 mmol). The reaction was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature and was filtered through celite to remove the solids formed. The solvent was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate, water, brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to provide ethyl 5-iodo-2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-7-carboxylate (829) (3.12 g, 98%) as a red solid.
