Dimethyl 2-[(6-chloro-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-3-yl)amino]-2-butenedioate (1.0 g, 0.0033 mole) was added to diphenyl ether (25 ml) at 200°. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 10 min. (bath temperature 260°-280°). The product, which crystallized out on cooling, was filtered off and washed with ether. Recrystallization from DMF gave white crystals (0.8 g, 88%), m.p. 300°-305°.
