A mixture of 40.5 g. of 1-methyl-5-(p-chlorophenyl)-pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-7(1H)one (0.156 ml.) and 120 ml. of diphenyl ether is heated with stirring at 250° for 90 minutes and then allowed to stand overnight. The crystallized 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-methyl-2H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-4-ol is filtered off, washed with acetonitrile and dried at 80°, yield: 37.3 g. (90%); m.p. 302°-305°. A sample, recrystallized from ethanol, melts at 305°-307°.
