Procedure

III (3.52 g, 0.0100 mole) methanol (50 ml), and Raney nickel (0.5 g) were stirred under hydrogen at a pressure of 1 atmosphere, until absorption stopped. After filtration, the solvent was removed from a water bath (60° C, 10 mm Hg). The residual light yellowish oil (3.60 g) was distilled under reduced pressure to give 3.01 g (85%) of VIII as a light yellowish oil, b0.03 165°-176° C, nD25 1.4608.
