Procedure
A mixture consisting of 2.3 gm (0.003 mol) of erythromycylamine, 1.1 gm (0.006 mol) of acetylglycolaldehyde-diethylacetal, 20 ml of dioxane, 2 ml of water and 12 gm of Dowex 50 W was stirred at room temperature. After 6 hours of stirring the ion exchanger was filtered off and washed with dioxane. The filtrate was evaporated, and the residue was purified by column chromatography (basic aluminum oxide, activity stage 3; chloroform/methanol = 4:1). The fraction with an Rf -value of 0.6 was evaporated and brought to crystallization by treatment with chloroform/ether. 2.4 gm of colorless crystals, m.p. 105°-110° C, was obtained.
