Reaction Steps

An aqueous of S-methylthiouronium sulphate (2.1 g) is added to a solution prepared from 1-methyl-4-(2-aminoethyl)imidazole dihydrochloride (3.0 g) and sodium hydroxide (1.21 g) in water. The resultant solution is heated under reflux for 17 hours. The product, isolated in a manner similar to that described in Example 1 is recrystallized from aqueous ethanol yielding pure 2-(1-methyl-4-imidazolyl)ethylguanidine sulphate, m.p. 280°-282° C.
