g. of 3-p-phenoxyphenyl-3-hydroxybutyric acid amide (obtainable from 4-phenoxyacetophenone and bromoacetamide/zinc) and 5 g. of KOH in 100 ml. of ethanol are boiled for 3 hours under nitrogen. The mixture is evaporated and worked up to give 3-p-phenoxyphenyl-3-hydroxybutyric acid, m.p. 137°-138°.
