Procedure
A slurry of 1-phenyl-8-[(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-7-methoxy-1-oxo-2-naphthalenyl)methyl]-1,3,8-triazaspiro[4.5]decan-4-one, hydrochloride (1:1) (10.0 g, see example 195) in 150 ml of methanol is cooled in ice and treated dropwise with 4.5 g of sodium borohydride in 25 ml of water. The resulting mixture is stirred over a 60-hour period at room temperature under nitrogen. The reaction mixture is diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride. Concentration of the dried methylene chloride solution yields the crude product. Trituration with absolute ethanol gives 8.1 g of the title compound, melting point 216°-218° C.
