12.9 g of ethyl 2-chlorophenoxyacetate (prepared as described in Preparation 1) and 6.00 g of succinic anhydride were dissolved in 70 ml of methylene chloride, and 25.2 g of aluminum trichloride were added thereto in small portions at 0°-5° C., with stirring. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, poured into ice-water and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and dried. The solvent was distilled off in vacuo and the resulting precipitate was recrystallized from a mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane, to give 14.3 g of the title compound melting at 137°-139° C.
