Procedure
64 g of 2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylphenylhydrazine [prepared as described in: J. Org. Chem. 42, 542 (1977)] were heated with 200 ml of 85% formic acid in a water bath for 90 minutes. After cooling down, the yellow solution was poured into 250 ml of water. The crystalline precipitate was filtered by suction, washed with water and dried at 80° C. to yield 72 g (98%) of 2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl-N-formylphenylhydrazine, m.p.: 152°-153° C.
