Procedure

5-(2-Pyridinyl)-4-pentyn-1-ol (8.8g) was hydrogenated over 1.0 g of 10% Pd/C in 125 mL of ethanol at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. After the uptake of hydrogen had stopped, the catalyst was removed by filtration and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residual oil was distilled on a Kugelrohr apparatus (115°-120° C./0.1 mm) to yield 8.4 g of 2-pyridinepentanol.
