Reaction Steps
Thionyl chloride (0.48 mol) is added to an ether solution (1L) containing 2-carbomethoxymethoxybenzyl alcohol (0.4 mol), and a small amount of dimethylformanide (0.5 mL). The reaction is stirred at ambient temperature for 12 h, after which it is evaporated and the residue diluted again with ether (1L). This ether solution is washed with 2% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (3X's) and then dried (magnesium sulfate). The solvent is removed to give 2-carbomethoxymethoxybenzyl chloride which is used directly in Step E.
