Procedure

2,7-dibenzyl-4-chloro-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-pyrimido[4,5-d]azepine of Step B (86 mg, 0.23 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (10 ml) and sodium methoxide (25 mg, 0.47 mmol) was added. The reaction was refluxed under nitrogen for 16 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (50 ml) and water (50 ml). The organic layer was separated, washed with brine (50 ml), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford a colourless oil, 75.5 mg, 89%.
