A mixture of 2-chloro-4,6-dimethyl-3-nitropyridine (step 2, 1.3 g, 7.0 mmol) and 4-aminophenylethyl alcohol (1.4 g, 10.2 mmol) was placed in a sealed tube and heated at 150° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was cooled and purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (2:1) to afford 1.6 g (80%) of the title compound as orange solids: 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ 9.55 (1H, br.s), 7.57 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 7.20 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 6.52 (1H, s), 3.84 (2H, t, J=6.4 Hz), 2.85 (2H, t, J=6.4 Hz), 2.54 (3H, s), 2.42 (3H, s).
