Procedure
To a solution of 2-(2-chloro-4-nitrophenyl)acetic acid (step 2, 4.5 g, 21 mmol) in dimethyl acetate/methanol (4/1) was added trimethylsilylchloride (0.3 ml) and stirred for 7 h at room temperature. The solvent was removed and the residue was purified by SiO2 column chromatography with developing hexane/ethyl acetate (10/1) to give 3.6 g (74%) of title compound as yellow oil.
