Procedure

A solution of 4-(3-quinolinyl)-3-butyn-l-ol (17.0 g, 0.086 mol) is hydrogenated over palladium on carbon (1.0 g) in ethanol (400 mL) at room temperature. After the catalyst is filtered, the solvent is removed under reduced pressure to give 17.3 g of a brown oil. The oil is chromatographed (silica gel, 2% methanol/98% dichloromethane) to give 13.5 g of the title compound as a yellow oil.
