Procedure
1N Sodium hydroxide solution (13 ml) was added to a solution of the compound (3.00 g) obtained by Step 3 in ethanol (70 ml) at room temperature under stirring. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours, and the solvent was distilled off. Water was added to the residue which was washed with ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer was acidified with aqueous potassium hydrogen sulfate solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and distilled to remove the solvent to give the title compound (1.85 g) as colorless crystals. mp 265°-267° C. (from ethyl acetate-diethyl ether)
