Ethyl 1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-2-(2-ethoxyphenyl)pyrimidine -5-carboxylate (1.0 g., 3,46 mmoles) was added over a twenty minute period to a cooled (ice-water), stirred mixture of 70% nitric acid (1.7 ml., d= 1.42) and 96% sulfuric acid (0.29 ml., d= 1.84). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 19 hours. The solution was poured into ice-water (300 ml.). The mixture was triturated and then filtered. The collected solid was recrystallized from acetonitrile to give the title compound (0.64 g., 55%), m.p. 222-224°.
