Reaction Steps

A mixture of ethyl 1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-2-(2-nitrophenyl)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate (0.91 g., 3.14 mmoles), 10% palladium on carbon (0.34 g.) and ethanol (200 ml.) was shaken in an atmosphere of hydrogen at an initial pressure of 3.5 kg./cm2. After hydrogen uptake ceased, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate concentrated. The residue was recrystallized from acetonitrile to give the title compound (0.445 g., 54.5%), m.p. 228°-230° (decomp.).
