Procedure
A steel bomb containing ethyl (±)-1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-2-(2-sec-butoxyphenyl)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate (3.76 g.) and liquid ammonia (ca. 45 ml.) was heated on a steam bath for four hours. The ammonia was removed. A solution of the residue in ice-water was acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The precipitate was recrystallized from methanol to give the title compound (2.99 g., 87.7% yield), m.p. 183°-185°.
