Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-2-(2-isobutoxyphenyl)pyrimidine-5-carboxamide (7.4 g.) and phosphorus oxychloride (150 ml.) was heated under reflux for 3.5 hours. Excess phosphorus oxychloride was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was treated with water (150 ml.). The mixture was stirred briefly, cooled, and filtered. The collected solid was recrystallized from 50% aqueous acetic acid to give the title compound (3.9 g., 58% yield), m.p. 186°-187°.
