Reaction Steps
A solution of ethyl (1-oxo-2-isopropyl-2-methyl-6,7-dichloro-5-indanyloxy)acetate (3.6 g., 0.01 mole, N-bromosuccinimide (2.4 g., 0.0134 mole) and benzoyl peroxide (20 mg.) in carbon tetrachloride is refluxed four hours, cooled and filtered free of succinimide. The solvent is evaporated and the crude product is purified by column chromatography and then recrystallized from cyclohexane to afford substantially pure ethyl (1-oxo-2-isopropyl-2-methyl-3-bromo-6,7-dichloro-5-indanyloxy)acetate, m.p. 83°-85° C.
