Procedure
Benzothiazol-2-yl isocyanate dimer prepared in Example 1, benzene (300 ml) and the dimethyl acetal of 2-methylaminoacetaldehyde (80 grams; 0.67 mole) are charged into a glass reaction vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer and thermometer. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for a period of about one hour. After this time the mixture is filtered to remove a yellow solid that has formed. The filtrate is then stripped of solvent under reduced pressure to yield the desired product the dimethyl acetal of 2-(1-methyl-3-benzothiazol-2-ylureido)acetaldehyde as an oil.
