A mixture of 4-chloro-2-phenyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine (50 mg, 0.193 mmol) and 2-chloro-5-methoxyaniline hydrochloride (56 mg, 0.290 mmol) in water:ethanol (1:1, 10 ml) was refluxed for 48 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and then basified with aqueous 2N NaOH to pH 10-12. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water, water:ethanol (2:1) and isolated as a brown solid (28 mg, 38%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): 8.50-8.47 (m, 2H), 7.99 (d, J=3.0 Hz, 1H), 7.53-7.47 (m, 3H), 7.36 (d, J=9.0 Hz, 1H), 7.29 (s, 1H), 6.91 (s, 1H), 6.71 (dd, J=3.0, 9.0 Hz, 1H), 3.88 (s, 3H).
