Alternatively, (3Z)-3-[(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylidene]-1-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (4b) was prepared in >90% yield by treating 1- {(3Z)-3-[(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-methylidene]-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-1-yl}ethyl acetate (4a) (500 mg) with aqueous acetonitrile (10 mL) and formic acid (200 mg) overnight.
