Reaction Steps
The crude ester (726 mg, 3.70 mmol, 1 equiv.) from above was dissolved in 20 mL MeOH and treated with 2.0 M aqueous NaOH solution (10 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 h and then placed on a rotary evaporator to remove MeOH. Water was added and the mixture was washed once with ether. The aqueous layer was then acidified with 6 N HCl aqueous solution and the product was extracted with ether 3 times. The combined organics were washed once with brine, then dried (MgSO4). The solution was filtered through a small plug of SiO2 and the solvents removed in vacuo, providing 458 mg (2.72 mmol, 74%) of trans-2-cyclohexyl-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid.
