Procedure
To a solution of 7-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-naphthalen-1-one (1.42 g, 6.81 mmol) in methanol (15 mL) and dichloromethane (5 mL) is added NaBH4 (1.04 g, 27.25 mmol) in one portion. After 15 min, water is added and the organic solvents are evaporated in vacuo. The aqueous layer is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to give 7-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-naphthalen-1-ol, which is used in the next step without further purification.
