Reaction Steps

To a stirred suspension of ethyl 6-fluoro-1-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro[1,8]-naphthyridine-3-carboxylate (0.46 g) in ethanol (15 ml) was added a solution of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.10 g) in water (5 ml) at ambient temperature. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours, evaporated under reduced pressure to a small volume, diluted with water then acidified with aqueous 2M hydrochloric acid. The solid formed was filtered from solution and sucked to dryness to give the required product as a colourless solid, 0.39 g. 1H NMR (CDCl3+d6-DMSO) δ: 14.4 (1H, s), 8.92 (1H, s), 8.72 (1H, d), 7.94 (1H, m), 3.98 (3H, s).
