A solution of 4-phenoxy-phenol (169 g, 0.9 mol) in pyridine (500 mL) was treated with acetic anhydride (90 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was partitioned between DCM and 10% HCl solution, and the resulting mixture was stirred for 1 h. The organic phase was washed with 10% HCl and water until pH=7. The organic layer was dried and the solvent was evaporated to afford acetic acid 4-phenoxy-phenyl ester (200 g, 97%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): 2.21 (s, 3H), 6.94 (m, 6H), 7.04 (m, 1H), 7.28 (m, 2H).
