To a stirring solution of (1H-benzo[d]imidazol-5-yl)methanol (501 mg, 3.38 mmol) in benzene (35 mL) was added MnO2 (2.35, 27.0 mmol). After stirring at room temperature for 12 h the reaction was then filtered through celite and the filter cake was washed with THF (200 mL). The Filtrate was concentrated to give the title compound (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carbaldehyde) (201 mg, 41%) as a white solid: 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 12.90 (bs, 1H), 10.04 (s, 1H), 8.43 (s, 1H), 8.19 (s, 1H), 7.75 (s, 2H).
