Procedure
To 15 L of dehydrated ethanol solution containing 2.48 Kg (purity: 95.1%., 8.54 mol) of diethyl 2-(2,2-diethoxyethyl)malonate was added 564 g (purity: 85%, 8.54 mol) of potassium hydroxide under argon gas atmosphere, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, 2 L of toluene was added to the obtained concentrate and the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. This operation of azeotropic dehydration with toluene was repeated three times to obtain 2.45 Kg of the title compound as a yellowish high-viscous oil substantially quantitatively.
