A solution of phenol (235 mg, 5.0 mmol) in DMF (2.0 mL) is treated with NaH (60% in oil, 100 mg, 2.5 mmol) for 20 min and then treated with 3-(bromomethyl)-4-phenyl-8-(trifluoromethyl)quinoline (183 mg, 0.50 mmol) in DMF (1.0 mL). After 16 h, the reaction is treated with water and extracted with ether. The extract is dried with MgSO4 and concentrated to an oil. Chromatography with 10:90 ethyl acetate:hexane affords the title compound as a white solid (114 mg, 62%). MS (ES) m/z 380.2; HRMS: calcd for C23H16F3NO, 379.1184; found (ESI, [M+H]+), 380.1246;
