Reaction Steps
A suspension of 4-hydroxy-4-mercapto-6-(3-methoxypropyl)pyrimidine (Method 84) (3.9 g, 19.5 mmol) and chloroacetic acid (1.89 g, 19.9 mmol) in water (20 ml) was heated at 120° C. for 24 hours. The mixture was allowed to cool, adjusted to pH7 with sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with EtOAc. The extracts were combined, dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent removed by evaporation to give the title compound (1.9 g, 55%) as a solid.
