Reaction Steps
A mixture of N-[4-(2-chloro-1-oxopropyl)phenyl]acetamide (0.19 mol), N-methyl-methanamine hydrochloride (1:1)(0.38 mol) and K2CO3 (78.8 g) in CH3CN (1400 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 12 hours. The mixture was cooled, poured into water and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic layer was dried, filtered and the solvent was evaporated, yielding 39.77 g (89%) of (±)—N-[4-[2-(dimethylamino)-1-oxopropyl]phenyl]-acetamide (interm. 9).
