Reaction Steps
A 25 mL round-bottom flask equipped with a Barrett trap and a condenser was charged with 1.00 g of 3,4,6-trifluorophthalic acid and 15 mL of mixed xylenes under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was then heated under reflux with azeotropic removal of water for 5 hr. and was then cooled to room temperature. After the addition of 20 mL of hexane the mixture was cooled in an ice bath. The solvent was then removed on a rotary evaporator to afford 3,4,6-trifluorophthalic anhydride.
