Procedure
2.7 g. of crude ethyl 1,2,6-trimethyl-5-(4'-bromophenyl)-4-oxonicotinate was suspended in 27 g. of 5% NaOH in 1:1 methanol/water. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 21/2 hours, cooled and acidified. Filtration of the resulting solid provided 2.2 g of 1,2,6-trimethyl-5-(4-bromophenyl)-4-oxonicotinic acid. m.p. =228°-230° C. (decomposition).
