Procedure
A mixture of 5.0 g of (S)-3-hydroxy-1-(2-propynyl)-2-pyrrolidinone, 6.7 ml of pyridine, 0.2 g of dimethylaminopyridine and 6.7 ml of acetic anhydride was stirred in a water bath for 3 hours. The mixture was diluted with 150 ml of dichloromethane, washed in succession with water, sodium bicarbonate solution, 1N hydrochloric acid, sodium bicarbonate solution and brine, dried and concentrated, giving 6.4 g of (S)-3-(acetyloxy)-1-(2-propynyl)-2-pyrrolidinone [α]D260 =-45° (dichloromethane).
