Procedure
To a stirred solution of sulfuric acid (21 ml, 95-97%) and HNO3 (15 ml, fum.) was added at 0° C. 3-(4-pyridinyl)-1H-imidazole [CAS No. 51746-87-3] (6.36 g, 43.8 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 45 min, at 55° C. for 23 h and at 100° C. for 2 h and poured into ice-water (200 ml). Sodium hydroxide solution (32%) was added to the stirred mixture until the pH reached 5-6, the precipitated product was collected by filtration and washed with water and hexane to yield 2-nitro-3-(4-pyridinyl)-1H-imidazole (7.95 g, 95%) as a light yellow solid; mp 234° C.
