To a stirred solution of crude 1-(2-methyl-pyridin-4-yl)-2-amino-ethanone dihydrochloride (8.50 g, 35.8 mmol) in water (60 ml) was added at room temperature potassium thiocyanate (16.4 g, 168 mmol) and the reaction mixture was heated under reflux conditions for 3 h and at 0° C. for 2 h. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration, saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (100 ml) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The product was collected by filtration to give 4-(2-methyl-pyridin-4-yl)-1,3-dihydro-imidazole-2-thione (5.44 g, 79%) as a light brown solid; MS (ISP) 192.2 [(M+H)+].
