Procedure
To a solution of 3,5-dichloro-4-(4′-hydroxy-3′-iso-propyl-phenoxy)benzyl alcohol in CH2Cl2 (5.0 mL) at −78° C. is added BBr3. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 16 h, poured into ice water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer is dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product is purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with acetone-hexanes to afford 3,5-dichloro-4-(4′-hydroxy-3′-iso-propyl-phenoxy)benzyl bromide.
