Procedure
Bromine (1.29 ml) was added to a dichloromethane (40 ml) solution of ethyl 3-phenyl-2-furancarboxylate (3.60 g) at 0° C. and stirred overnight at 25° C. The reaction solution was diluted with chloroform and washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution, 20% aqueous sodium thiosulphate solution, and saturated brine. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, thereby giving 3.50 g of ethyl 5-bromo-3-phenyl-2-furancarboxylate.
