Procedure
To a solution of 7 (246 mg, 0.6 mmol) in glacial acetic acid (8 mL), and ethanol (20 mL) was added 10% palladium on carbon (60 mg). The mixture was placed in a Parr hydrogenation apparatus at 50 psi for 4 h at room temperature. The mixture was filtered through hyflo and the filter pad washed with water. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure and the precipitate was collected and washed with ether to give 8a in 67% yield, mp 240-242° C. 1H NMR (D2O/DMSO-d6); δ 1.80 (s, 2×CH3), 7.06 (d, J=3.6 Hz, 1H), 7.11 (d, J=3.6 Hz, 1H), 7.36 (d, J=3.6 Hz, 1H), 7.39 (d, J=3.6 Hz, 1H), 7.89 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2H), 7.98 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2H). Calcd for C16H14N4O2-2.0AcOH-2.4H2O: C, 52.48; H, 5.87; N, 12.23. Found. C, 52.28; H, 5.49; N, 11.91.
