Procedure
A solution of (2RS,3RS)-4-nitro-benzoic acid-3-indol-1-yl-2-methanesulfonyloxy-3-phenyl-propyl ester in dioxane (30 mL) and a 2N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (15 mL) were stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with 5% aqueous sodium carbonate and water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to give (1RS,2SR)-1-(oxiranyl-phenyl-methyl)-1H-indole as an oil. MS (ESI) m/z 250 ([M+H]+).
