To a 80% ethanol solution of the product of above-mentioned (4-b) (0.23 g, 0.63 mmol) was added potassium cyanide (0.12 g, 1.9 mmol) and heated under reflux for 4 hrs. To the reaction solution was added water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried and the solvent was distilled away under reduced pressure to give 0.19 g of 5,6-dimethyl-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-cyanoethylisoindolin-1-one [IUPAC name: 3-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-5,6-dimethyl-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-yl]propanenitrile].
