To a mixture of 5,6-diamino-1-ethyl-1,3-dihydropyrimidine-2,4-dione (2 g, 11.76 mmol) and 1-{[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]methyl}pyrazol-4-carboxylic acid (3.5 g, 12.94 mmol) in methanol (50 ml) was added 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (2.47 g, 12.94 mmol), and the reaction mixture was stirred for 16 hours at room temperature. Solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was washed with water and methanol. The product was dried under vacuum to provide N-(6-amino-1-ethyl-2,4-dioxo(1,3-dihydropyrimidin-5-yl))(1-{[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]methyl}pyrazol-4-yl)carboxamide, a compound of formula (16).
