To a solution of 10 g (55.8 mmol) 6-amino-9-(2-hydroxyethyl)-9H-purine in 200 ml 0.5M CH3COONa/CH3COOH buffer (pH 4) were added 4 ml of bromine. The reaction mixture was stirred for 8 hours at room temperature. The precipitate was isolated, washed with water and crystallized from ethanol to give 6.13 g (43%) of the desired product.
