Procedure

Methyl(2E)-3-[3-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]acrylate (600 mg), MeOH (6 ml) and then 10% palladium carbon (99.9 mg) were combined under N2 atmosphere. The reaction mixture was stirred at r.t. for 7 hours under H2 atmosphere (1 atm), and filtered through a celite pad. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography over silica gel with n-hexane/AcOEt (1:1-→1:2) as an eluent to give methyl 3-[3-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]propanoate (283.3 mg) as colorless oil.
